Inside Culture Date with Dublin 8: Young Voices and Community Vision

Sean, 24, grew up in Dublin’s Coombe and has always been immersed in creative expression. From his mother’s love of music to his own pursuits, piano, guitar, drums, painting, and house music production, he has nurtured a diverse artistic palette. When he joined Culture Date with Dublin 8 as an intern, he expected a quiet corner to take notes. Instead, he found himself actively contributing to meetings, event planning, and communications. Beyond the festival, Sean’s perspective highlights the value of young practitioners in shaping culture. He’s learning the intricacies of project coordination, the importance of careful planning, and how partnerships sustain cultural initiatives. Through his contributions, whether sharing ideas, supporting events, or promoting his own creative work, he realizes that young people can influence culture rather than simply observe it.

Culture Date with Dublin 8, co-founded and led by Grace McEvoy, has been instrumental in highlighting the cultural identity of Dublin 8 beyond its historic streets. Grace, a multifaceted creative producer, curator, and visual artist, holds a Joint B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art and History of Art from The National College of Art & Design (2010). Over the past 15 years, she has co-founded major artist-run initiatives, including BLOCK T (now FLUX Dublin), curating exhibitions, performances, and public programmes that connect artists, audiences, and communities. Shortlisted for the Sky Arts Academy Scholarship in 2014, Grace has exhibited in galleries across Ireland and internationally, exploring liminal spaces, mysticism, archetypes, and the unseen forces shaping human experience. Her work at Culture Date aims to celebrate Dublin 8’s heritage while providing platforms for emerging creatives, nurturing connections between individual expression and collective cultural identity.

The annual festival is a focal point for this vision. Each year, it brings together artists, performers, and the local community to explore Dublin 8’s history, architecture, and culture through immersive experiences. This year’s edition, themed Songlines of the City, taking place from 4–10 May 2026, showcases the neighborhood’s rich narratives through music, visual arts, and storytelling. For Sean, the festival is a living classroom. Participating in planning sessions, liaising with volunteers, and witnessing the festival’s unfolding gives him a sense of the orchestral nature of cultural projects. As he reflects, it’s like observing a movie behind the scenes, where the project manager conducts an intricate performance of collaboration, logistics, and creativity.

Sean’s personal journey enriches his contributions. Drawing inspiration from philosophy and literature, he reads works by Marcus Aurelius and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, finding resonance in themes of identity, society, and self-discovery. He also explores spirituality and psychology, deepening his understanding of human experience. Beyond his academic and literary pursuits, Sean produces a Spotify podcast, “Say It As It Is”, sharing his perspectives and connecting with audiences, and he plans a long-term documentary on music, aiming to release it a decade or more from now. Currently studying Media Studies at IADT in Dún Laoghaire, he approaches life with a philosophy of positivity, influence, and living fully: seeing colors in life rather than limiting it to black and white.

Through the lens of Sean’s internship, the synergy between young creatives, visionary leadership, and community-focused cultural programming becomes clear. Culture Date with Dublin 8 is not just a festival; it’s an evolving platform for discovery, education, and connection. As the initiative grows, Sean hopes its impact will continue to expand, positioning the festival among Dublin’s most significant cultural events and highlighting the potential of Dublin 8 as a hub of history, creativity, and future artistic exploration.
