Susan Madert

Susan Madert is a painter and printmaker now based in Dublin at La Catedral Studio.

Susan’s current and ongoing work focuses on self-narration/representation as a means of forming one’s own identity. Susan uses self-portraiture to explore themes around identity, displacement and belonging. The different environments in which she sites herself form an important part of this exploration with hotel bedrooms featuring frequently for their liminal quality.  With the frequent inclusion of mirrors, reflections and the camera phone, a sense of staging becomes apparent. This performative element addresses the acute tension between how we feel ourselves to be and how we are increasingly obliged to present ourselves to the world. These self-portraits reject the societal conventions of female beauty and resist the invisibility of the older woman. . The works examine solitude, as distinct from loneliness or isolation, and in doing so make oblique reference to the not entirely historical assumption associating women’s creativity with selfishness.

Susan is a graduate of Bath Academy of Art and Goldsmiths’ College, London and has exhibited widely in Ireland in group and solo exhibitions and is a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland.
