Susan Madert

My work explores identity and belonging, specifically through self-narration as a means of forming one’s own identity. My work is informed by research and visual readings of other women artists and my practice embraces diversity in the creative processes with which I engage. In a series of paintings staged in hotel bedrooms the inclusion of mirrors, reflections and a camera phone creates a sense of staging and the triangulation of camera, mirror and viewer invites the observer into the narrative. The performative element addresses the ongoing representational negotiation between first and third person representations of the self. A series of paintings on found china plates considers the loss of identity imposed by motherhood and domesticity and creates a physical connection to past lives and lost opportunities. Reflecting on the iconography of female saints, a series of monoprints considers the historical representation of women only as the embodiment of required virtues with self sacrifice perceived as the greatest virtue.
