John Paul McCann
Born in Dublin in the 1970s, John Paul McCann discovered painting relatively late in life. After the death of his father in 2006, his sister gifted him an oil paint set for Christmas, sparking his journey as an artist. Portraiture quickly became his preferred subject, drawn to capturing the character and essence of his subjects.
His style ranges from classical influences to early 12th-century aesthetics, with inspirations including Walter Osborne, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Gainsborough. He favors a vibrant palette, often using cadmium yellow, cadmium red, ultramarine blue, and cobalt blue.
John Paul’s experiences living abroad, including a year in Australia, and periods in Israel, Italy, Spain, and New York, have enriched his artistic perspective. Music, particularly Elvis, alongside religious themes, also strongly informs his work.
He has exhibited at Pearse House and in Ranelagh, and continues to develop his practice at La Catedral Studios, contributing his nuanced approach to portraiture to the wider creative community.
